7znews Dogs is an educational website. Everything published here — articles, tool outputs, charts, checklists — is intended to inform and support owners of older dogs. It is not a veterinary consultation, a diagnosis, a prognosis, or a treatment plan. No website can examine your dog. No calculator can listen to its heart, palpate its abdomen, or take its blood pressure. Those things require a vet in the same room as the dog.
2. The Dog Life Expectancy Calculator is a planning tool
The Dog Life Expectancy Calculator is a structured estimate built on generalised breed averages and weighted health and care factors. It is designed to help owners think clearly about lifespan and quality of life — the kind of conversation an experienced vet would have in clinic, expressed as a tool.
Important limitations:
- The output is a probability range, not a fact about your individual dog.
- It does not account for unknown internal disease, unreported symptoms, or events that have not yet occurred.
- It cannot replace bloodwork, imaging, physical examination, or clinical judgement.
- It should not be used as the basis for end-of-life decisions. Those decisions belong with you and your vet, supported by examination and bloodwork — never a calculator.
3. Always consult a veterinarian
If your dog is unwell, in pain, showing new behavioural changes, losing weight, drinking more, eating less, or doing anything that has prompted you to search the internet — please contact a veterinarian. Articles on this site can help you have a better conversation with that vet. They cannot replace the appointment.
If you suspect a clinical emergency — laboured breathing, collapse, bloody vomit or stool, suspected poisoning, an inability to urinate, severe pain, or any sudden and severe decline — stop reading and contact your veterinarian or your nearest emergency veterinary hospital immediately.
4. Never self-prescribe
Medicines designed for humans — including common over-the-counter pain relievers — can be dangerous or fatal to dogs at familiar human doses. Do not give your dog any medication that has not been prescribed by a vet for that specific dog, including medication left over from a previous pet. If you are not sure, call your vet before you give anything.
5. Accuracy and currency
We make every reasonable effort to ensure the information on this site is accurate, evidence-informed, and reflects current veterinary thinking at the time of writing. Veterinary science changes. We may not catch every change immediately. If you spot something that looks outdated or wrong, please tell us and we will review and correct it.
6. Individual results vary
Two dogs of the same breed, age, and apparent health condition can have very different outcomes. Genetics, environment, undetected disease, owner circumstances, and luck all influence individual dogs in ways no general article or calculator can fully capture. Any general advice should be interpreted in the context of your specific dog, ideally with your vet.
